Excerpt, Interview & Giveaway: The Only Boy by Jordan Locke

Title: The Only Boy
Author: Jordan Locke
Publication: December 17th 2013
Genre: Dystopia, Young Adult

Synopsis:
Mary is stuck in Section One, living with three hundred women in a crumbling hospital. She wonders what life was like two centuries ago, before the Cleansing wiped out all the men. But the rules—the Matriarch's senseless rules—prevent her from exploring the vacant city to find out.

Taylor's got a dangerous secret: he's a boy. His compound's been destroyed, and he's been relocated to Section One. Living under the Matriarch means giving up possessions, eating canned food and avoiding all physical contact. Baggy clothes hide his flat chest and skinny legs, but if anyone discovers what lies beneath, he'll be exiled. Maybe even executed.

Mary's never seen a boy—the Matriarch cut the pictures of men from the textbooks—and she doesn't suspect Taylor's secret. If she knew, she might understand the need to stop the girls from teasing him. If she knew, she might realize why she breaks the rules, just to be near him. Then again, she might be frightened to death of him.

Taylor should go. The Matriarch is watching his every move. But running means leaving Mary—and braving the land beyond the compound's boundaries.

Excerpt:
From Mary’s Point of View

I stand on the roof, scanning the city. Many of the buildings are crumbling, from centuries of decay. Below me, trash from the hospital circles the compound, piled into a wall. A fuel tanker sits on one side of our water tower, a broken-down car on the other. In the distance lies the forest. I would love to wander through the trees, to search for whatever wildlife still lives, to see if I can find just one flower.

It isn’t the rules that stop me. It’s the Earthers—the women who live in the woods. I saw two of them, years ago, when I snuck out one day and wandered into the forest. A child’s voice echoed in the distance. I hid behind a bush and peered through the leaves. A woman and her daughter approached, wearing deerskin parkas, their skin darkened by the sun. I wondered, without men and without a genetics lab, how was the daughter created?

The girl heaved a spear at a tree, and it fell short of the trunk.

“You need to follow through,” the woman said. “And turn your hips.” She made a twisting motion. “Like this.”

“Why can’t we just eat vegetables?”

“Snow will come soon.” The woman picked up the spear. “The crops won’t last through winter.”

“I’m not gonna kill the animals,” the girl said.

“When you’re hungry enough, you will.” The woman turned my way, and I ducked. Their footsteps grew closer, their voices louder. They were within feet of the bush. I crouched. Leaves crunched under my knees. When the footsteps stopped, I ran. Before I got more than a few yards, my foot caught on a stick, and I fell. By the time I righted myself, the woman hovered over me, holding the tip of the spear to my chest.

The girl ran to the woman’s side. “Don’t kill her!”

“Get back, Wren!” She moved the spear to my face, inches from my nose, and held a frightening scowl.

The girl pulled on her mother’s skirt. “You’re scaring her.”

The woman’s eyes never left me as she scooped up the girl. With the spear pointed at me, she backed away. Even though my hands were shaking and I could barely stand, I wanted to follow them into the forest.

Excerpt:
Chapter One
Sara Fairchild stared at the three men and two women who surrounded her with hard eyes. They had cornered her in an alley. But only because she wanted them to. She was having a bad day, might as well end it right. Feet planted firmly in the dry dirt, she called out to the group arrayed in a semi-circle around her, “Nice day for a fight, isn’t it?”
The woman to her right wore a raggedy scarf around her hair and her ears were covered in at least five earrings per a lobe. She glared and said, “You think you’re funny, girl?”
Sara watched as the woman spit into the dirt before her in disgust.
“Your da was a disgrace,” the woman continued. “You’re just like him. A coward.”
“And a cheat!” said the man directly in front of her. He nervously fingered a blade in his hands. It was a poorly crafted one. That Sara could tell from five feet away. She stood in front of him with her back-up against the wall. She wasn’t carrying her broadsword but she did have one fine long knife at her waist, a dagger on her thigh, and a baton she’d lifted from a city patrolman in her right hand.
“Is that so?” Sara said directing her voice at the man in front of her, “And what, pray tell, did I cheat you of Simon Codfield?”
Her tone was level. Even surprised. He shifted warily. He was nervous even with four of his friends to back him up. When the people standing with him began to look at him oddly, he stiffened his back. Simon licked his lips and said, “Cards. I know you had an extra ace in your belt. Admit it now and we’ll only beat you two ways until Sunday.”
She titled her head, “And if I admit it later?” Even he couldn’t miss the derision in her voice.
“We’re trying to go easy on you,” said Simon Codfield – his voice dipping into desperation. He might be a liar as well as a thief, but he was no fool. Sara knew the only reason he and his crew had followed her into this alley was because if he didn’t accuse her, he would have to take the fall for loosing over forty shillings in a card game that started off over a bet of five. She knew and he knew that he didn’t have forty shillings to give. That was one month’s pay for a dockworker, never mind a ne’er-do-well like Simon who hadn’t worked an honest job a day in his life.
“Tell you what. Why don’t you drop those trousers of yours? Then we’ll call it even,” said the thief lord in charge of the west district of Sandrin. She turned to face the man who had spoken. He rubbed a hand over his two-day old beard with a grin.
Sara brought up the long knife in her left hand, “Why don’t you drop yours, Severin, so that I can cut off your balls for you?”
Anger flashed in the thief lord’s eyes. Anger and passion. Sara smiled. She wasn’t joking. If she got close enough to him, she’d make him a eunuch without batting an eye. Simon Codfield gulped and took a step back. He knew she wasn’t playing around.

Excerpt, Interview & Giveaway: Bending the Rules by L.K. Lewis

Title: Bending the Rules
Author: L.K. Lewis
Publication: April 1st 2014
Genre: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:
“Drake isn’t just someone I love, he’s the one I love the most in this world. He’s my best friend, my breath, my everything. I realize in this moment that the true reason I’m on this journey to find Drake is not just because I miss him and want him back, I’m also missing a huge part of me. Until we’re together again, my life isn’t complete. Without him I’m not whole.”-Morgan

“… I’m so sorry I couldn’t go to you. It was nearly impossible not to but Morgan we wouldn’t be standing here right now if I had. You found me Baby. When you met me on your first day at Baylor what seems like a lifetime ago you found me. Only this time I’m not letting you go.”-Drake

Struggling to get her life back on track after being left suddenly and inexplicably by (secret) boyfriend –not- boyfriend and boss Drake Baylor Jr., Morgan Lane searches the globe to find Drake knowing that the only way to truly live the life she’s worked so hard for is with him by her side.

Banished to Zurich, Switzerland by his father after being caught Breaking the Rules, Drake has nine months to get the European Division of Baylor Industries back on track. Again, he must obey the rules so that he can hopefully return to his life with Morgan and take the helm of Baylor Industries.

Everything is going according to plan as usual for Adrian Thompson who has just gotten Drake banished to Switzerland as part of his plan to get Morgan (his college sweetheart and hopefully future trophy wife) back in his life for good. With a little help from Lana Lane, Morgan’s mother, Adrian is hoping to have Morgan wearing his ring by New Year’s Eve.

After a few months of being wooed by old flame and now boss Adrian, and without so much as a word from Drake, Morgan hesitantly accepts Adrian’s invitation to join him for New Year’s Eve in St.Moritz Switzerland. Foiling Adrian’s plan, a “chance encounter” finds Morgan back in Drake’s arms.

Will Drake and Morgan be able to overcome the distance and time that is now between them along with a few of the hurdles that life has thrown their way? Morgan and Drake are once again faced with figuring out how to start their new future together- this time not Breaking the Rules, only Bending them.

Character Interview:
I recently sat down with Drake Baylor Jr. and the love of his life, Morgan Lane for a candid interview discussing love, loss, and the risks they’ve taken while bending or sometimes even breaking the rules.

Morgan, after his departure you searched the globe for Drake, hoping to find him and bring him home. What made you so determined that you would find him?
From the moment we met, Drake and I have had a connection; as clichĂ© as that sounds. We tried to stay away from each other knowing what would happen if we were caught breaking the stupid rules Drake’s dad set for him. We were careless and we got caught by Adrian in Vegas. Within a matter of days my world had crumbled around me. I no longer had the job and career I had worked so hard for. Drake had dropped out of my life and I felt hopeless. Drake Sr.’s words tore right through me as he said Drake would already be off in the arms of someone else, but even as I heard them, I knew something wasn’t right. Drake Sr. tried to tell me that he had dissolved his son’s position and that Drake wanted nothing to do with me, but I still felt our connection. I knew he had been sent somewhere as a punishment, I just had to figure out where. Having nothing but time on my hands, I set out to find Drake and bring him home. It wasn’t so much that I was determined I’d be able to find him, more like I didn’t know how to move on with my life without him.
But you weren’t able to find him…
Sadly no. And I was able to find a way to continue living my life without him in it but I was devastated. I never gave up on him though, and now that I have Drake back, I never have to.

Drake, you were understandably miserable in Zurich. What kept you going during that time, and how did you manage not to repeat past behavior with women, drugs, and alcohol?
It’s not what kept me going, but who…this beautiful woman sitting right next to me. I made the selfish mistake of flying Morgan out to Vegas for the weekend. I missed her, and wanted her out there with me. If I would have kept my head down, and returned home to her when the weekend was over we wouldn’t have missed that time together. I am a big believer that what happens always happens for a reason though. Perhaps the time we spent apart reaffirmed what we already knew, which was that we wanted to be together forever. Knowing that if I stayed the course and did my job in Zurich I could be together with Morgan again kept me together and focused. Being with Morgan was all I needed to push through every day. As far as past behavior, I don’t need anything or anyone to make me feel complete. Using drugs and women in the past was my way of filling the hole in my heart left by my mother’s death and my father’s absence. Morgan makes me feel whole. She’s the only one I see. The way I dealt with things in the past is no longer on my radar.

Morgan, do you ever worry that the mistakes Drake has made in his past will come back to hurt him?
No, I’ve never worried about that. Drake has been completely open and honest with me about his past. There isn’t anything that could surface about him that I’m not already aware of. We’ve all made mistakes before and I’m so proud of Drake for turning his life around and not repeating that cycle of behavior. He lives his life determined to make each day better than the last. If any part of his past should try hurt his future I’ll be right by his side supporting him.

Drake, how did it feel reading Morgan’s emails, knowing you couldn’t answer them?
Morgan’s emails were heartbreaking. Knowing I was the one causing the pain and with just a quick email or phone call I could explain everything and put us back on the right path was soul crushing. Morgan knows what she means to me, and to see her so heartbroken that she was questioning whether or not I would come back to her was really hard to read. I appreciated her honesty though. Each email she wrote me, however hard it was to read, still renewed my focus to return to her without further breaking any rules because by writing to me, it meant she still cared.

Drake, how hard was it not to turn around when you heard Morgan calling your name in the airport in Paris?
I took that trip to Paris to get away from Zurich for the weekend and clear my head. I was missing my girl and needed to feel close to her without screwing up in any way. That is why I chose to go to Paris. Morgan loves it there and we’ve talked about spending time there together so many times that I thought a weekend in Paris would renew my focus in doing my job so I could go home to her. When I saw Morgan in the airport I felt completely gutted. I was twenty feet away from her as she walked around that mom tying her kid’s shoes. I wanted so badly to call her name, or run up to her and throw my arms around her and just hold on forever but I knew I couldn’t. Morgan knows I trust her completely. I knew she wouldn’t have told a soul that we saw each other, but even so, I couldn’t risk it. My dad was a very connected man, and it would have only taken one person to recognize me with Morgan and report back to him and it would have been over. I think it was even harder for me not to turn around that day when Morgan called my name than it was to leave for Zurich in the first place. I could hear the excitement and the sadness in her voice as she called to me. Watching her collecting her bag then hailing a cab completely defeated and heartbroken is a feeling I never want to have again.

Morgan, how did it feel to learn that Adrian lied to you and really was responsible for Drake being sent to Zurich?
Because of our history, it was a really crappy to learn Adrian had lied to me. I knew in my heart that we would never be together and that Drake has always been the one for me, but knowing that all of Adrian’s motives to get me back weren’t pure was disappointing because he’s always been a better person than that. I could go on and on about how Adrian is responsible for my separation from Drake, and how that makes him such an a-hole, but the truth is, Drake and I broke the rules. We knew the risks and we took them anyway because we love each other so much that any risk is worth it if it means we are together. Drake didn’t have to fly me out there and take such a risk, and I didn’t have to go. If we hadn’t broken the rules, we wouldn’t have been caught and it was our penance to pay. It was the worst time I’ve ever had in my life, but it brought us here today, so it was worth it in the end.

Drake, what is it that you love so much about Morgan?
You’ve been in this room the past twenty minutes right? (laughing)  First of all, my girl here is a complete knockout. I get lost in her eyes daily. I have to ask her to repeat herself all the time and she thinks I’m not listening to her but the truth is, I’m so mesmorized by her beauty I completely zone out. Besides her undeniable beauty, Morgan is so bright, and determined, and she loves so fiercely. She doesn’t judge me and my faults, she loves me despite them. She has a smart mouth the fires me up like no other too. She’s the total package and I thank my lucky stars every day that she loves me just as much as I love her.

Morgan, now that you and Drake can be together as a couple out in the open, what are you looking forward to?
I’m just ready to start our life together. I’m excited to go on double dates with Amanda and Garrett, and to start crossing things off our bucket list. Drake and I both dream big, and have already started to see some of our dreams coming true and I can’t wait to live the rest of our lives as we want to. The only rules we want to live by are the ones we make for ourselves.

Drake, any final thoughts?

No, I think my girl summed it up pretty well. We have the world at our finger tips, and couldn’t be more excited to go explore. (Turns to Morgan,) By the way Babe, speaking of Amanda and Garrett, we have lunch plans with them…something tells me ours isn’t the only one we’ll be planning in the near future…

Birds of Prey: Of Like Minds

Author: Gail Simone
Illustrators: Ed Benes, Alex Lei, Rob Lea

Title:Birds of Prey: Of Like Minds
Publication: March 1, 2004
Publisher: DC
Genre: Graphic Novel, Comic Book
Pages: 144
Audience: 16 and up
Rating: 5 out of 5
Source: Purchased

Synopsis (from the cover): After being paralyzed from the waist down, former Batgirl Barbara Gordon took on the persona of information cyber lord oracle and began a successful crime-fighting partnership with the Black Canary.
But when the two femmes fatales are confronted by Savant, a villain whose physical and mental abilities equal their own, they become drawn into a deadly and elaborate trap. Now with the madman holding Black Canary hostage, Oracle- who reluctantly enlists the aid of the Huntress- must choose between revealing Batman's secret identity to her captor and saving the life of her friend and partner.

My thoughts:
Gail Simone is one of my favorite comic book writers. I also follow her on Twitter and she is hilarious and extremely opinionated. Either way, the lady can write. I'm not sure if this is volume three, or if she took over and made it her own. Amazon claims it is volume 1, Goodreads says volume 3. I feel like it could be a continuation of Chuck Dixon's story, but starting in this graphic novel, Black Canary knows who the Oracle is. Either way, I believe this is where the story really picks up. I gave the other two a 4 out of 5, but I could not put this book down! I was taking a 15 minute break at work, and accidentally took a longer break because I was reading.
This story adds a more human aspect to the characters. Even though they are superheroes, they are still  human and can get hurt. It also deals with relationships- business, romantic, friendship. It just made the storyline more rounded. No matter what number in the timeline, this graphic novel falls in, it is a perfect stand alone graphic novel and I highly recommend it!

Excerpt:
Satiny heat slid across Lex's body from chest to feet. He inhaled Abbie’s ginger and pumpkin shampoo. She smelled so good. She felt even better, warm and soft tucked into his side. Cranking an eye open, he took in his surroundings. Everything in the room was white. From the curtain hangings to the duvet to the wicker rocking chair in the corner. On the bureau were dozens of photos. And on the far wall, he recognized some of the photos he'd taken with Abbie.
Her deep, even breaths told him she was still out. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d actually slept with someone. The few times he’d tried always ended up with a disastrous nightmare.
But with Abbie, he’d actually been able to escape his nightmares. More like he passed out after exhausting himself. He hadn’t slept for more than two hours at a time in over a month. But with Abbie, all he’d dreamed about was her. Guilt pricked at his subconscious.
He had to deal with the Gemma situation. She’d encouraged him to go after Abbie at the party, still he had an obligation. But it was way past time for him to start living his life. Gemma would have to understand. And staying away from Abbie wasn’t going to happen. It was almost as if she’d dragged him into her gravitational orbit with her wit, strength, and beautiful smile.
He picked up one of her slim braids and inspected the woven strands of black and lighter brown pieces as they shimmered in the soft morning light. She shifted in his arms, grinding her hips into his crotch, forcing a hiss from him as his semi-hard dick sprang to attention.
As if they were heat seeking missiles, her hips scooted back into his, and he gnashed his teeth together, praying for control. She was so hot, so undeniably sexy without even trying.
What the hell had he gotten himself into? He wanted her more than he’d ever wanted anybody in his life. But if he wasn’t careful, he’d lose her. He had too many balls to juggle. The safest thing for him to do was to leave her alone. But he knew he couldn’t give her up. He wanted a thousand moments like this. Mostly because he was a selfish wanker.
She wiggled again. Lex continued to hold her and ignored the sweet agony. Fascinated by the contrast of his tanned hand and her smooth, gleaming, dark skin, he stared as his thumb drew lazy patterns on her shoulder. He could ignore it, just for the pleasure of holding her.
Ah, who the hell was he kidding? He was moments away from waking her when she wiggled again. He wanted her. Again. But he'd had her three times in the middle of the night.
His hand rested on her hip and reflexively contracted when she scooted her ass further into his groin. He groaned. “Jesus, Abbie, I'm only so much of a gentleman. You do that again, and I'm not going to be responsible for what happens.”
She giggled, and the sound was low and earthy, like she should do nothing but laugh all the time. “If you want to pretend later that I took advantage of you in your weakened and food-deprived state, then that's okay.”
He grinned. “The authorities will eventually find me in here naked, half starved, tied to the bed, and horny, very horny.”
She turned in his arms. “Now we're talking.”

Excerpt
As they hit the center of the dance floor closest to the DJ booth, Abbie closed her eyes and let the music take over her limbs. Jasper mixed some unfamiliar drum and base beats along with some mild electronica and infused them into dancehall, rock, and popular rap songs.
The only problem was, three women dancing together tended to attract attention…unwanted attention.
It wasn’t long before guys started to join them, dancing in the periphery, then eventually sidling up close. Tamsin and Sophie welcomed the attention. Abbie tried to focus on the music and ignore them. The first guy to slide up behind her had her body stiffening. Immediately, she stepped forward, spun around, and ended up on the other side of their little circle.
The next guy tried a frontal approach. Luckily, she could see him coming and waved him off. Maybe it was time to find Max and the other guys and sit down.
She waved at Jasper, and he frowned but nodded his acknowledgement. Sophie and Tamsin were too occupied to notice she’d slunk off the dance floor. On the edges where it was darkest, she paused and searched for where the guys had gone.
“I figured I’d try something different and ask you to dance.”
Abbie whirled around and let out a small squeak of alarm. The muscles in her lower belly quivered, and her breath caught. Her savior from earlier stood in front of her, looking like a cross between an angel of mercy and the devil incarnate. “We have to stop meeting like this,” she mumbled.
A smile tugged at the corners of his lips. “Well, there’s no rain at the moment, so we should be safe. I trust we were able to save your camera?”
Heat flooded her cheeks. “Yes. Thank you. Honestly that could have been ugly today. I’m indebted.”
“How about a dance, and we’ll call it even?”
A dance? With him? Pressed up against… “I uh…”
“Now, I’m not as good as you are, so you’ll need to take it easy on me.” He outstretched his hand and waited for her to take it. He didn’t press or push, just stood there…waiting.
Jasper didn’t help her when he switched the track to a dancehall reggae song with a grooving beat.
Butterflies fluttered low in her belly. When was the last time she’d had butterflies? Unfortunately with those butterflies also came fear. The fact was she didn’t know this guy. But, if he’d wanted to hurt you, he could have already.
It’s just a dance. She glanced down at his hand and placed her palm in his. Determined not to be nervous, she smiled up at him. “Hardly seems fair. You save my life and all you get is this dance.”
He drew her close, but not too close, keeping his hands at her waist. He waited patiently until she looped her arms around his neck. “It’s well worth it to me.” The low rumble in his chest as he spoke sent shivers coursing through her body.
As it turned out, he didn’t need any help dancing. He moved them easily in time to the seductive beat. Abbie didn’t dare look around because she knew what she’d find—couples pressed so close that they might as well be naked and in bed. Dirty dancing was a requisite of dancehall music, but her partner kept a marginally safe distance between them, figuratively if not literally, because with every down swing of the base, their hips rocked into each other.
She swallowed hard, but then forced her gaze up to meet his. As soon as their gazes met, her heart rate kicked. His slate gray eyes framed by dark lashes, stayed on hers. Nervously, she licked her lips. He stilled for just a second, causing her to lose her footing and bringing her flush against his body.
She froze, muscles tight. Touching wasn’t something she was used to or allowed easily. But with him, she didn’t want to be anywhere else. He smelled of mint and something crisp and woodsy, like he’d spent the afternoon outside on the water. She released her strangled breath and let her body relax into his. She felt, rather than heard, the low rumble in his throat as his chest vibrated against hers. His warmth enveloped her, and she could tune out everything but him. As if it were only the two of them on the edges of the dance floor.
There, in the dark, in the arms of a relative stranger, she felt safe.
His hands shifted on her waist so his thumbs traced her hipbones, and Abbie forgot to breathe. Wobbly knees forced her to tighten her hold on him. As if responding to her body’s automatic softening, her eyes dipped to his lips.
What the hell am I doing? Her brain tried desperately to take control of the situation. But she didn’t fell like listening. For the first time in longer than she cared to think about, she liked having someone’s hands on her. She wasn’t afraid. Instead, she craved it, that connection. Her body hummed with vibrant sexual energy. An energy she hadn’t felt in six long years. There were nerves, but not from fear or trepidation. It felt good. Better than good. It made her remember how much she needed to be touched. Or rather touched by someone who could make her feel safe.
But just as the last of the tension ebbed out of her body, his thumbs pressed gently against her hipbones, moving her back several inches. He raised his head, and they stood like that for several seconds before Abbie realized Jasper had switched the music. Oh, God. She’d been standing here with a total stranger, practically melting into him.
Heat rushed to her face. “I—”

He smiled, and she was too blinded to finish. Gently his thumbs traced across her hipbones once more, and he let her go. “Thank you for the dance.” Then he turned around and walked away.
