Synopsis: Make a note: never agitate a madman. Successful Thoroughbred trainer Mike West just made that mistake-and he’s gonna pay-more than he ever realized. But it’s all in the family; his sister, Kate, has been the object of the madman’s desire on the social network “My Town”. Her constant rejections have infuriated him! People who seem to be in the way start turning up dead, and he’s got Mike and Kate next on his list! In the first book of The Unbridled Series, Cindy McDonald introduces you to the world of Thoroughbred racing, while taking her cast of characters on a wild ride through a maniacs mind.

My Thoughts: Wow!!! The West Family really knows how to get into a heap of mess and how to get themselves out of it. Kate is just a normal small town girl. She still lives at home and has not interest in most of the men in her town. She finds herself falling for Giorgio. Kate doesn't want to be the girl who throws herself at him so she is taking it slow. Kate has no idea who she is dealing with. All is not what it seems with Giorgio.

I could not put this book down. This is the first book in the Unbridled series. From the first chapter I knew this series is a keeper. I am spellbound by Cindy Mcdonald's story telling and the twist and blind curves this story takes you on. This book really makes you question who you are chatting with online and question our justice system. It's wise to remember things are not always what they appear.

Review, Interview, Giveaway: Into The Dark by Stacy Green

Title: Into The Dark
Author: Stacy Green
Publication: October 29, 2012
Publisher: Muse It Up Publishing
Source: Author/Publisher
Genre: Suspense
Audience: 17 and up

Synopsis:
A two-hundred-mile labyrinth of dark storm drains serves as a refuge for the delusional stalker who will go to any lengths to possess fragile, emotionally isolated Emilie Davis. To survive, Emilie will have to confront the secrets of her past she has kept locked away from everyone, including herself. Emilie is a master escape artist—she’s fled a manipulative mother and a controlling ex-husband. But it’s impossible to evade a stalker who uses a bank robbery as a ruse to kidnap her. He’s still out there, hiding in the Las Vegas tunnels and dodging police. Emilie’s life careens out of control as her assailant continues his pursuit. She has nowhere to turn but to Nathan Madigan, the hostage negotiator who worked the robbery. Nathan is haunted by his failure to protect a loved one fourteen years ago and dedicates his life to saving others. Determined to catch the lunatic hunting Emilie, he finds himself losing his professional detachment. He fears history is about to repeat itself if he cannot protect Emilie from the Taker’s obsession.

The police close in on the Taker’s identity as Nathan and Emilie grow closer to each other and to resolving the misery of their own pasts. At the height of The Taker’s madness, his attempt to replace someone he’s lost will either kill them all or set them free.

My Thoughts: Emilie is a woman of many secrets. She keeps her walls up and feels no one knows her deepest and darkest. That is until the bank, where she is manager, is robbed and she is held hostage. The "Taker" knows so much about Emilie and she is puzzled as to why. Emilie must face her past and figure out who the "Taker" is so he can be stopped before she is harmed.

Stacy Green has constructed a tale of suspense and mystery. I had many ideas as to how Emilie and the "Taker" had crossed paths but none of my hunches were correct. I found myself pleasantly surprised with Emilie's strength with all she has been through in life it would be easy for her to completely fall apart. This is a thrilling read that will not leave you disappointed.

Interview:
Ashna: What about Into the Dark makes it stand out?

Stacy Green: Into The Dark stands out because of the Las Vegas storm drains. A lot of people don’t know about their existence, and they certainly don’t know about the homeless living in them. While they don’t get a lot of scene time, they still played a pivotal role in the book. They inspired the subplot and helped me to flesh out the characters and the theme. And I hope the book brings a little bit of awareness to the homeless problem in this country.

A: Who was the hardest character for you to write about?

SG: I’d have to say my heroine, Emilie. She was hard for me to get a handle on for a long time. I kept confusing strength for anger and all out crabbiness, and it wasn’t until I understood the difference that I was able to go back to the beginning and get her straightened out. Characters – especially females – can be strong AND vulnerable, without being mean or cruel.

A: What is the best part about being published?

SG: The validation that someone believes in me and is willing to invest in me. I’m all for indie publishing – I think it’s the future of publishing, to be honest. But small presses are vital and willing to take a chance on new authors. MuseItUp Publishing is a quality publisher who believed in my book and stood by me through a lot of ups and downs. Right or wrong, their investment made me feel as though I’d “made” it.

A: Who is your favorite author and what about their work draws you in?

SG: It’s really hard for me to pick one. I would have to say Lisa Gardner because her writing/storytelling improves with leaps and bounds, and she is a master at suspense. She’s very good at developing strong characters without dumping backstory, and there is no one better to keep a reader on the edge of their seat. I study her books quite a lot.

A: Are there any similarities between you and your characters?

SG: I think there are always similarities. Subtle ones, at that. Emilie is stubborn and can be sarcastic–she definitely gets that from me. And both Emilie and Nathan dwell in the past, which is a major Achilles Heel for me. I’m working on it, though!

A: What is your favorite quote?

SG: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

A: What is your favorite song of all time?

SG: No way can I pick a favorite song, lol. I’m an eighties junkie, so I’d have to include Total Eclipse of the Heart. Another great one is 100 Years by Train, although it always makes me cry. Crazy Love by Steve Carlson, I Dreamed A Dream from Les Mis…

A: Are there any new projects in the works?

SG: Yes! My second book, a gritty mystery set in the Deep South, is slated for a March 2013 release, and I’m working on a trilogy centered on the idea of whether or not people are born evil. I hope to release the first book late next year.

1            A: What is the question that you wish interviewers would ask, and the answer to that question?

SG: Why should a reader spend their money and take a chance on your book?
Because it’s an entertaining book with a fast plot and good characters. I’m a very picky reader, and if a book bores me, I’ll put it down without second thought. INTO THE DARK is a book that would keep me entertained and guessing until the end, and as a reader, that’s the most important thing for me.

Excerpt:
Nathan peered through the chain link fence. “Is that it?”

“I didn’t even know this culvert was here.” Chris started to climb.

“I drive over it every day, too.”

“That’s why they call them box culverts,” Johnson said from the other side of the fence. “You don’t see them unless you’re walking inside.” “Why couldn’t we just cut this thing down?” Nathan huffed as he made the short trip up and over the wobbly chain link barrier. They were several blocks north of the raucous Freemont Street Experience and looking into the mouth of one of the storm drain entrances.

“Because no one in Metro wants to deal with the city officials over it,” Johnson said.

“Talk about spook central.” Nathan shined his light toward the culvert. Bathed in shadows, it stood silent and empty. A chill of foreboding washed over him. “Watch yourselves.” Johnson led the way as the three men entered the culvert, weapons ready. “Anything could be lurking.”

Standing water covered the toes of Nathan’s boots. The air was thick with mildew. “Drain’s over there.” He shined his tactical light on the flood map. “To the right.”

The temperature dropped as they entered the large drain. Darkness engulfed them.

Chris’s whistle cut through the eerie stillness. “Wow. It’s a hell of a lot cooler in here. Place smells like feet, but I’ll take what I can get.”

Nathan shined his light on the walls. Colorful graffiti decorated the concrete.

“Someone’s a talented artist.”

The darkness thickened with each step. The odor grew increasingly foul. “Jesus, I can taste the stench in my mouth.” Chris gagged and spit into the dirty water.

Nathan didn’t respond. He was too busy trying to keep the contents of his stomach down and wondering how the people who lived in the tunnels stood the smell and the constant dangers. The drains provided relief from the sweltering desert heat, and free housing, but they were death traps. Large portions ran directly underneath the city streets and inhabitants risked carbon monoxide poisoning and the frequent threat of flooding. Growing up poor in North Las Vegas gave him a better perspective than many, but he couldn’t imagine having no other alternative than to live minute-by-minute.

“We shouldn’t run into any camps,” Johnson said. “They’re deeper in. One of the biggest is right under the Strip.”

“You know we aren’t going to find shit,” Chris choked out. “It’s too dark. Guy planned this for months. He knows his way around. We need to get out of here and check on Adam.”

“Medic called me when they got him to the hospital,” Johnson said. “He’s going into surgery. All we’d be doing right now is sitting around waiting. Still have to do our jobs, Holt.”

“He’s just a rookie. I should have been in front of him.”

“Stop,” Nathan said. “You followed protocol. That was a lucky shot.”

“Doesn’t make it right.”

Silence fell over the men as they moved farther into the stinking drain. Something hard crunched underneath Nathan’s boots. He nervously shined his light into the black water. Crawfish swam around his feet, probably on their way to the Las Vegas Wash. A mushy white glob looking suspiciously like used toilet paper floated by, and he focused his light away from the stream. Better not to know what he was stepping on.

A loud splash ahead brought all three to a halt.

“You hear that?” Johnson asked.

“Sounds big.” Chris stepped in front of Johnson and raised his Glock.

“Las Vegas SWAT,” Johnson shouted. “Identify yourself.”

Nothing.

“Maybe it was an animal,” Nathan said.

“That’s even worse than a junkie,” Chris said. “With my luck, Cujo’s man-eating cousin will show up and give me rabies.”

“They have shots for that now.”

“No shit, Sherlock.”

A second loud splash was followed by the distinct sound of footsteps plodding through the water.

“That’s no dog.” Chris sprinted after the runner with Nathan and Johnson closely following. The beams of their lights flashed haphazardly against the walls making the tunnel even more ominous.

A strange brightness glowed several yards ahead of them. Their quarry came into view. He was too short and stocky to be their man, but he could have information.

Author Bio:
Raised in southeastern Iowa, Stacy Green grew up watching crime shows with her parents, so her love of suspense and psychological thrillers is no surprise. She’s fascinated by the workings of the criminal mind and explores true crime on her popular Thriller Thursday posts at her blog, Turning the Page.

After earning her degree in journalism, Stacy worked in advertising before becoming a
stay-at-home mom to her miracle child. She rediscovered her love of writing and wrote several articles for a city magazine before penning her first novel. She shelved the long drama and began working on a suspense book set in Las Vegas, featuring a heroine on the edge of disaster, a tormented villain, and the city’s infamous storm drains that house hundreds of homeless.

Into The Dark is suspense with a dash of romance, and Stacy is hard at work on her next book, a darker, grittier thriller set in the Deep South.
When she’s not writing, she spends all her time with her precocious daughter, supportive husband, and their three obnoxious but lovable canine children.

Review and Giveaway: Dangerous Deception by Cindy McDonald

Title: Dangerous Deception
Author: Cindy McDonald
Publication: November 1, 2012
Publisher: Acorn Book Services
Source: Publisher/Author
Genre: Murder/Suspense
Audience: 17 and up

Synopsis:
Vic Deveaux’s glory days as a winning jockey have ended, but he refuses to accept that pile of horse hockey!

When the West family asks Vic to take an easier position at their Thoroughbred farm, Westwood, he becomes enraged and teams up with two greedy stable hands in a scheme to kidnap the youngest son, Shane.

Things turn ugly when Vic discovers that his new-found friends have murder on their minds. Suddenly Vic finds himself between a rock and a hard place. He has betrayed his good friend, Eric West, but will he participate in his son’s murder as well?

Not content to sit at home and wait for her men to bring her brother home, Kate West convinces homicide detective, Carl Lugowski, to check out a hunch at an old abandoned mansion. Soon they’re trapped in a hornet’s nest of a notorious biker gang.

Oh yeah, Vic’s deception has placed the West family in more danger than they know what to do with!

My Thoughts: The West family has found themselves in a tight spot again. They must pull together as a family to save each other from certain death. Kate West is again my favorite character. I love tough women; Kate can hold her own and proves she can do so in any situation. Having and being a mother I understand the drive to protect your own at all cost. I can easily relate to the West and would take many of the same actions if I was in similar situations.

I love this series. Dangerous Deception did not leave my hands until I had turned the last page.  I have not read hot coco yet and can’t wait to see what else is in store for this family. It’s not necessary to read the series in order but with a series this good you don’t want to miss a moment of all the exciting and suspenseful happening in the West family.

Excerpt:
The fading sunlight seeped through the curtains, shimmering over the silky white Persian cat, Stella, sleeping on the window sill. The candles on the vanity flickered, sending a waft of vanilla throughout the room, camouflaging the smell of sex. Ava West’s auburn hair cascaded across her shoulders, and her breathing was shallow and steady against Carl Lugowski’s chiseled chest.

Lieutenant Carl Lugowski worked homicide for the Rosemount Police Department. He was normally a light sleeper as most cops are. Subconsciously prepared for that emergency phone call from the station that jolts them from their bed, because a body had been found in some dark alley, or a domestic argument had gone terribly awry, resulting in murder. But today his sleep was deep and his gentle snore was restful, holding Ava’s beautiful naked body in his arms, after their afternoon of abandoned love-making.
God she knew how to get to him. He had taken a half day off, they were supposed to see a matinee, but when he arrived at her apartment, Ava had other plans. Not a problem. Nosiree, Bob. She answered the door in a dark blue lace Teddy, accentuating the swell of her round breasts and her stiff nipples peeking through the sheer delicate fabric. Her sultry green eyes had a “come on” look, and her plump lips curled, begging to be kissed, hard.
Ava didn’t flirt. When she wanted sex, she was shameless. She opened the door and pressed her lips to his, running her hands over his chest, unbuttoning his shirt. There was no fumbling. The buttons slipped open with unerring precision. He slipped the strap of the Teddy from her shoulder, baring her beautiful breast, running his tongue over the pebbled nipple, feeling the undeniable pressure of his erection. Her smile turned devious, pushing him away. Ava was like that. She teased. He knew what she was about.
As gracefully as a dancer, she swooped up two glasses of wine from the hall table, strutting toward the bedroom. Her long silky hair caressed her back as she moved. Lord have mercy, how he loved to watch her walk toward that bedroom where pleasure would rule the afternoon, and where once would never be enough to satisfy her desire. Ava was a demanding lover, and he aimed to please and please and freakin’ please. Who needs a damned movie?
Their clothes lie on the floor, and the daylight was gently giving way to the purple whisper of twilight. They were spent. The sheets lightly covered their warm moist naked bodies, until suddenly the surreal quiet was broken by Lugowski’s cell phone buzzing and vibrating against the lamp on the nightstand. Damn it. His eyes dragged open slowly, rotating toward the meddling reverberation. He let out a low grouse, and then begrudgingly reached for the phone. Ava tugged at his arm.
“Let it go to voice mail,” she murmured.
Not a bad idea. In fact, he was seriously considering it, when his eyes caught the name on the screen: KATE WEST.
Game changer.
His relationship with Ava meant the world to him. He had wanted that woman since well, forever. He wanted her when they were in high school. He wanted her while he was away at the academy, and he still wanted her when he returned to find that she was Mike West’s wife. But now she was exactly where he always wanted her to be, in his life, and in his bed.
Wrangled and rocked beyond his control, his heart helplessly skipped a beat when Kate West was around, hell, when Kate West’s name was merely mentioned. She stirred something inside him that he couldn’t explain. He couldn’t wrap his head around, it confused and quite frankly scared the hell out of him.
She wasn’t the clichĂ©d blue-eyed, blonde-haired, “girl next door”. But she was definitely a woman any man would want to come home to, wrap his arms around, and make love to night after night. Kate West was what Lugowski would define as “a keeper”.
WTF? He was in bed with the woman of his dreams. He should really let the call go. Yeah, really, that’s what he should do. She was squeezing him, why would she be calling? They didn’t have anything but a professional relationship. So...
“I need to take this. Sorry, baby,” he said, sitting up, pressing the phone as tightly and as covertly as possible to his ear. “Lugowski...” he announced, making sure he sounded authoritative, official.
“Carl, I’m so sorry to bother you. This is Kate West.”
Ava groaned, dragging her fingers through her hair, perking her ears when she detected a slightly familiar female voice, filtering through the receiver. It made her brows furrow and her lips purse. Suspicion was mixing it up with jealousy, fast. Lugowski had successfully muffled the voice, but she tilted her head against the pillow, narrowing her eyes, engaged. The voice sounded like Kate’s, and that was definitely an unacceptable intrusion on her afternoon delight.
“What’s going on?” Lugowski asked, recognizing the disquiet in her voice.
“I don’t want to talk about it over the phone, but it’s really important, Carl. Can we meet at McDonald’s?”
Coffee, he had had coffee with the lovely blonde at McDonald’s several times, usually at his request, and it had become almost a code between them-never anything sexual, and he wasn’t sure what he would do if it ever did. Shit. What was he thinking? Kate was Mike West’s little sister, and Ava’s ex-sister-in-law. It was too complicated, too weird, too out-of-control...
“I’m on my way,” no hesitation, the words spilled right out of his mouth, as he ended the call, pitching the sheets aside, swinging his legs over the bed, and reaching for his boxer briefs.
Briskly sitting up, Ava grabbed his arm. The black satin sheets slipped to her waist. Her breasts bobbed delicately into glorious view, “What? Wait a minute, where are you going?” She demanded in a high-pitched annoyed tone, and it only took a nanosecond for her green bedroom eyes to morph into a jaded glower.
It was a justified question that he knew he couldn’t give an honest answer to; unless he was absolutely sure he wanted to endure the repercussions. Ava would be furious, to say the least, if she knew he was leaving her bed to go to Kate’s aid, or whatever it was that he was going to, he wasn’t sure.
He just knew that he had to go.

Author Bio:
For twenty-six years my life whirled around a song and a dance: I was a professional dancer/choreographer for most of my adult life and never gave much thought to a writing career until 2005. Don’t ask me what happened, but suddenly I felt drawn to my computer to write about things I have experienced (greatly exaggerated upon of course) with my husband’s Thoroughbreds and the happenings at the racetrack.

Surprised? Why didn’t I write about my experiences with dance? Eh, believe it or not life at the racetrack is more…racy. The drama is outrageous—not that dancers don’t know how to create drama, believe me, they do but race trackers just seem to get more down and dirty with it which makes great story telling—great fiction.

I didn’t start out writing books, The Unbridled Series started out as a TV drama, and the Hollywood readers loved the show. The problem was we just couldn’t sell it. So one of the readers said to me, “Cindy, don’t be stupid. Turn your scripts into a book series.” and so I did!

In May of 2011 I took the big leap and exchanged my dancin’ shoes for a laptop—I retired from dance. It was a scary proposition, I was terrified, but I had the full support of my husband, Saint Bill. It has been a huge change for me. I went from dancing hard five hours a night to sitting in front of a computer. I still work-out and I take my dog, Harvey, for a daily run. I have to or I’d be as big as a house. Do I miss dance? Sometimes I do. I miss my students. I miss choreographing musicals, but I love my books and I love sharing them with you.

Synopsis: Airline Captain Frank Braden and his wife Nicole are suddenly stalked by professional assassins who have a deadline to make their deaths look like an accident or a suicide. And the couple doesn't know why they are being targeted. They don't realize that they stand in the way of a deadly conspiracy. Little by little they are pulled into a dangerous web of intrigue by a murderous criminal network that deceptively offers the pilot his wife's life if he will concede to their demands. This is a thriller that rocks the highest levels of Washington.

Dangerous Past is a story of a man who must choose between doing what ought to be done or keeping his family alive by allowing a murderous and powerful VIP to escape his past.

My Thoughts: Frank Braden is faced with identifying who is trying to kill him and why. His past has returned to haunt him and revenge runs deep. Frank must use his past experiences and knowledge to figure out how to save himself and his family from certain death. Wow!!! I was not expecting this read to be so intense. I felt a range of emotions and was pleasantly surprised by each one. Just as I thought the ride was over I was blind sighted by some new information that changed the course of things. This is a quick read as you will have difficulty putting it down. Ebbers weaves an intriguing mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat and turning the pages. With glimpses of the Vietnam war seen from both sides and how decisions made then continue to chance present day lives, Ebbers keeps you on your toes.

Read an Excerpt
It was nine at night, when the FBI agent watching Frank’s house decided to drive down the road to get a cup of coffee. He figured it would take no longer than twenty minutes. Inside the house Nicole made some coffee and gave a cup to Frank to take outside to give to the agent.
Frank went out the front door and looked for the agent’s car. He peered into the darkness and started to cross the street when he heard a voice from the side of the yard.
“I’m back here.”
Frank turned around and walked into the dark beside his house.
“Over here.”
Frank thought the voice now came from the back yard and he continued toward the rear of the house. When he got to the rear yard, Frank still couldn’t see the agent. “Hey, where in the devil are you? I got some hot coffee.”
“I think I saw someone run into the foliage near the lake. You better go back inside where it’s safe while I have a look around.”
“No, I’ll help you search. Wait a minute.” Frank jogged towards the voice that seemed to be closer to the lake now.
Standing in the shadows, John smiled. For whatever reason, whether his victim was a macho know-it-all type or just naive of the danger, many of the men he had killed had swallowed that bait. He also figured from the fax sheet he had received, that the Austin police had taken Frank’s .38-caliber revolver. Under the new waiting law, John knew it was impossible for Frank to get another weapon so soon unless his intended victim wasn’t a law-biding citizen. And John was counting on Frank to be a law-abiding sort.
As Frank neared Town Lake, he wished he had brought a flashlight. He couldn’t see the agent at all. So he went toward the shrubbery where he last heard the voice. “Hey, fellow, where are you?” Frank said. He felt foolish that he didn’t know the agent’s name.
“Here, right behind you.”
The voice startled Frank and he whirled around to face a well-built man wearing all black as though he was on a Special Forces recon night team. I’m in trouble, Frank thought, as he looked down the silencer barrel of a 9mm pistol. God, this guy is really good. “Did you kill the agent that was watching me?”
“I wasn’t paid to do that. Now, Frankie boy, let’s me and you take a walk to the shoreline.”
