Thoughts:This is an emotionally raw and compelling read. It gives realistic insight into the mental, physical and internal struggle of an anorexic teen. Lia struggles to cope with the death of her friend Cassie, so much so that she feels haunted by her. They made a pact to be the thinnest they can possibly be and of course this is a very unhealthy thing to do. Not only is Lia starving herself, she is a cutter. She doesn't comprehend the damage she is doing to her family, especially her little sister, Emma, who is more perceptive than she realizes. Lia will never be satisfied until that scale reads zero and by then she will beyond reach. The author does a great job of immersing the reader into Lia's mind and I like how the chapters are set up like weight on the scale, like 001.00 as so on. The characters are well developed and real. Stories such as this are hard to forget, they linger and it's hard not to feel what the characters go through. I believe that this is a book worth reading.

  1. I like Laurie Halse Anderson. The cover is neat looking too. I'll have to give this one a try. I've read her book Speak and enjoyed it.

  3. Thanks for your review :) I enjoy issue-based books. They are more entertaining and educational than dry texts. Sometimes the individuals who engage in such self-destructive behavior don't realize the impact their feelings and/or actions can have on their family/friends. It's so true that kids are more perceptive than they appear.

Lia and others like her feel they are alone and have nobody to turn to. They don't confide in anyone for fear of being judged and exposed. But, fortunately or unfortunately, such behavior is more wide-spread than they think. If they would only reach out to a trusted adult or seek out a support group, they may see a light at the end of the tunnel.

    1. It's just one of those books that leave you feeling open and sad. Just emotional because so many teens are going through this more than people realize for various reasons.

  4. I haven't read this one, but I have seen it at the library. It seems like such a great read, but more than that it seems like a good message. A good lesson for girls AND guys of all ages. It would be a great book to recommend to a teen girl close to you that could show her the truth behind the disease.

  5. I came really close to picking this one up at Barnes & Noble the other day but didn't have enough money at the time. I went in to buy a YA with a wintery feel to it, specifically Dash & Lily's Book of Dares. If that book hadn't been available, I was going to pick this one up. I definitely want to read it. Sounds really emotional and heavy.

  7. This is a scary topic for me cause my mother suffered from this among other illnesses for her whole life. Sadly she succumbed to her disease and died of heart failure at 40 but maybe it would help me to understand and not be so angry.

    1. I think I got an understanding of it. It felt so real as if I was watching her do these things to herself. Saddening
