Synopsis: Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up. And then he opened his mouth. Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something... unexpected happens. The hot alien living next door marks me. You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don't kill him first, that is.

Thoughts: The main character – Katy – is written beautifully. She’s strong willed, fun, doesn’t take crap, loyal friend, and intelligent. Her love interest – Daemon – is the complete opposite. He’s arrogant, rude, bossy, and argumentative. You would think these aspects in a guy are awful (which they are) but it actually makes the story interesting. He will do anything for his family, which is an “awww” moment. Daemon is also extremely hot (so many muscles it will make any girl swoon) and can be charming, which means you can almost forget how bad his attitude is. During the book he warms up to Katy, and you end up loving him.
The plot is semi-slow. You read the same thing over again,
such as “He’s so rude and bossy but he’s so hot!” which gets old when it’s
written in every chapter. When it comes to the storyline, it rocks. Cute
bad-boy alien with charming qualities? Sign me up! I’m personally into the
whole “I’m a bad boy but actually good and charming when you get to know me” or
“I drive everyone away but not you because you’re different”. Those two statements
are in the book, but it’s not the main character development.
You can see both Katy and Daemon grow, which is an aspect
that I admire. Again, my personal taste is character development in a book
instead of someone doing the same thing without learning consequences or
thinking the same thing through out the whole storyline. I don’t want to read
the same character traits chapter after chapter! Katy learns from her mistakes and is a better person because of them. She's very relatable and you're definitely going to be team Katy all the way! This book is an entertaining
read. I recommend it if you’re into hot and steamy romance. It loses 1/2 point for the repetitive paragraphs.
Sounds fun! I would love to read it!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. I so agree with repetitive sentences. I was recently reading a book where this was so prevalent that I had to put it aside. I have the beginning of this series and definitely need to get reading :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like it! :) This is one of my favourite books! It's funny and I love characters! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat review!! :)
I loved this book! Thanks for the review!!! Can't wait for Onyx!!!!
ReplyDeleteI sooo need to get this one! Sounds amazing :)
ReplyDeleteI loved this book and can't wait to read the next one. I want to reread it before the next. Hope she doesn't do that stuff in the next book chapter after chapter.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed Obsidian. A few months back I finally gave in and started it and loved it as well. I agree - I prefer strong characters and their development throughout the book. If I can't get a connection or downright dislike the characters, I end up really disliking the book. I have to admit, Daemon sort of annoyed me in the beginning, but once we got a peak at what was buried deeper within him I really enjoyed him a lot.
ReplyDeleteI have not had a chance to read this but I have bought the ebook. I am really looking forward to it and have heard a lot of good things about it. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a fan of aliens and the super natural stuff, but everyone seems to LOVE this and I keep wondering why. I guess its time I read it for myself and find out! Great review!
ReplyDeleteI too like books where the characters grow so this one sounds great! Since you said it's an "entertaining read", I think it will be perfect for the summer! Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteOh, aliens. Sounds interesting
ReplyDeleteGood review! The development is also one of the things I liked best about Obsidian. I can't wait to read Onyx. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! The cover is gorgeous and I love the love interest too ;)
ReplyDeleteAnyone who hasn't read this book... GO DO IT NOW!!!! THis book is soooo good. I know a lot of people have been saying that dince the beginning of the year, but seriously. It really is. I totally agree about Katy - she's a strong-willed character. And apparently, in Onyx (no, I was not one of the lucky ones to get an ARC), Katy grows and develops into an even better character! That's awesome. And who can forget Daemon... well yeah. lol. Thanks for the review!!!!

I loved Obsidian so much. Glad to know that you enjoyed it. I have to agree with your point about the repetitive paragraphs. Yes, he's arrogant, rude and hot, but we get the idea.
ReplyDeleteI have been on the fence with all of J.L.A's books, but Obsidian actually caught my eye. I wasn't entirely sure, but then I read 2 words that made my mind up in favor of this series: character. and development. TOGETHER. That makes me such a happy little camper. And I love that Katy is self-assured, take no crap kind of chick! I think Obsidian might just change my mind about this author after all!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I need to start getting onto this book !
ReplyDeleteI love Obsidian! One of my favorite reads of all time! I loved Katy and her strong personality, and I loved Daemon and his witty comments too!
ReplyDeleteI love this series! Shadow, Obsidian, and Onyx are great. Looking forward to Opal!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have seen a bad review of this book yet, which while makes me excited to read it, also makes me nervous because I'm afraid I'll be disappointed after all the hype. I do like that this book features aliens, which is different from the other supernatural books and series out.
ReplyDeleteAfter a lot of work, I finally have this book to pretty up my bookshelf, and as soon as I finish my pile of review books, I'm devouring this one! Your review makes me want to read it right now! :D
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I recently purchased both books of the series. Reading the reviews makes me want to dive right in. I'm into the "hot and steamy romance"!! This will definitely be my next book to read!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to read it! Sounds great! :)

ReplyDeleteIt's too bad about the repetitive paragraphs. Those drive me crazy, too! They're kind of the opposite of character development, you know? ;-) But it's good to read that we don't have to wait for the second book for the characters in this one to show some progress! Thanks for the review. =)
nice riview,,cant wait to reading this books,,and the cover make me speechless ^^
ReplyDeleteI love reading about aliens, when they are not the monsters that have to be killed. I can't wait to read this series!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! Will definitely be reading this soon!
ReplyDeleteI've started this book but put it down to read some others first. I really do need to finish it!
ReplyDeletegreat review!! i'm reading the ebook right know but its really hard for me to continue cause i dontt like reading ebook and lately ive been busy at school so i stopped..dont know for how long but i will continue someday cause looks like obsidian is on everyone's "fav" bookshelf
